  • NOD32 Antivirus Software provides a solid arsenal of protective features.

It tested exceptionally well in real time virus scanning, spyware detection, and antivirus updates, and it has consistently offered tech support second only to VIPRE.

Bitdefender is also one of the very few antivirus programs that includes automatic virus scanning of USB devices.

(Why more companies don't include this feature is a real mystery to us.)

  • ESET Antivirus
  • ESET's basic antivirus features are great.

Even difficult threats were detected and removed with minimal difficulty and resource usage (i.e. our testing computers ran smoothly and weren't sluggish while ESET ran.)

Most impressively—in a field of already impressive features—the tech support is excellent. Not only are the tech advisors knowledgeable and entirely accessible, the support features are entirely free.

  • ESET Smart Security 8 is an upgrade worth considering.

While its lower-priced sibling offers reliable basic protection, the upgrade provides added protection against a variety of different threats.

Aside from the two features we'd expect to see in an Internet Security suite, a software firewall and antispam features, ESET Smart Security also adds device Anti-Theft and Parental Controls.

  • ESET Security
  • While the parental controls aren't extraordinary, the device anti-theft is, especially for laptop users.

If your laptop is stolen, you can track and locate it online from any other device.

The only other antivirus program we know of that offers this is Bitdefender Total Security, which normally costs about $30 more.

Ultimately, the ESET Smart Security 8 software offers robust protection features, certainly enough to merit upgrading from the already thorough NOD32.
